I developed a fascination for animals from a young age, but especially for reptiles and in particular for snakes. Much to the dismay of my mother, at the age of six I had already attempted to catch my first Tiger snake.
The likes of the late, great Steve Irwin, as well as Sir David Attenborough, created the foundation of my passion as I grew older. Their love and vast knowledge of animals inspired me greatly, as it did for so many others.
I grew up on a farm, surrounded by animals, and from an early age decided to dedicate my life to them. Through my studies and at college, my passion for animals grew, and I was offered the opportunity to learn to work with and handle venomous snakes.
Despite the protestations of my mother, who forbade me from pursuing this line of work, the following four years of my life was spent in a wildlife park. There, I was one of the primary caretakers for injured, orphaned, and rehabilitated wildlife – including the captive management of reptiles.
Even outside of working hours, I could always be found catching and relocating snakes that had made their way into people’s homes or gardens. My passion continues to drive me today.
